Riches

Updated: Jan 19, 2021

The Federal Reserve System (the Fed) has stored up bars of gold. This is the country’s wealth. But instead of distributing that gold and we weigh gold like in ancient times, we print money. That money is a note that represents some part of that stored wealth. When a country prints more notes than the gold it has, the value of the dollar decreases. That’s why, according to the world, true riches are gold, silver, diamonds, rubies, copper, and other precious, rare metals. Money itself is just paper, though, it is valuable. That is why someone’s net worth refers to their assets; gold, silver, diamonds, cars they own (paid off), houses they own (paid off), art pieces, etc.

Philippians 4:19 KJV says, “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Some may take this to mean that God will supply all our materialistic needs such as food. The scripture states that He will supply our needs according to His riches in glory. God’s riches in glory are not materialistic. His riches don’t rust and cannot be stolen. What are these incorruptible riches? 1) Wisdom. Proverbs states that wisdom is better than silver and gold. “How much better is it to get wisdom than gold! And to get understanding rather to be chosen than silver!” (Proverbs 16:16, KJV). Notice how that scripture uses exclamation marks.

2) Favor and a good reputation. “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour is better than silver and gold.” (Proverbs 22:1, KJV).

3) Grace. God is rich in grace and he freely gives us grace. “That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:7, KJV). How great is it that His throne is not a throne of silver and gold, but of grace, holiness, and righteousness?

how great is it that God's throne is not a throne of silver an gold, but of grace, holiness, and righteousness?

I could go on about the many riches of God, but I think I’ll leave some up for discovery. In Luke 12, Jesus tells his disciples a parable of a rich man storing up his riches, but he dies and never gets to benefit from his riches. Then Jesus tells us to not worry about earthly treasures but store up treasures in heaven. He also tells us to seek the kingdom of God first, and all these things, earthly riches, will be given to you. We see God fulfill this promise many times throughout the bible. The most known example of this is the story of King Solomon. He asked for wisdom first, and God blessed him with wisdom and earthly riches. He also wrote the book of Proverbs which is filled with wise advice about money and wealth and how to obtain them. Daniel had favor with God and man. He lived through multiple empires and was a respected advisor for kings. Finally, when you are saved through grace, you will live eternally with God and walk on gold. Now that... is true riches.
